THE PARKER

Almost every cluster ring works by contrast — white diamonds around a colored center, so the color has something to push against. The Parker does the opposite.

Chocolate and champagne are the same color at different depths. Chocolate is brown at its most saturated; champagne is brown gone pale and golden. Setting one inside the other means nothing interrupts — the tone simply lightens as it moves outward from the center, the way a shadow does at its edge.

The center is rose cut: a flat base and a faceted dome, fewer facets than a brilliant, so it glows rather than flashes. That suits a brown diamond. Brilliant faceting exists to throw white light back at you, and a chocolate diamond has color to show instead — the rose cut lets you see into it rather than bouncing your eye off the surface.

Brown diamonds were once sorted out of the good pile. That they're now chosen deliberately is the whole point of a ring like this one — it only works if you wanted brown in the first place.

Old mine cuts have squarish outlines; old European cuts are rounder.
