The Hadley draws a sapphire out along a marquise and rings it in a diamond halo cut to that silhouette — the center elongated, then framed in white, the halo keeping the point crisp instead of soft.

You choose the sapphire color: blue in every saturation from midnight, royal, and cornflower to teal and bluish-green, plus yellow, pink, green, orange, peach, and the rare padparadscha. The halo reads white against every one of them, so your color choice sets the tone of the ring.

How does the Hadley differ from a typical sapphire halo or solitaire?

The Hadley's halo is a ring of round diamonds set to follow the marquise outline rather than a circle, so the white frame comes to a point at each end of the sapphire. Next to a solitaire you gain a full outline of diamonds around the center; next to a round halo you keep the elongated shape instead of rounding it off.

Will the halo make the marquise sapphire look wider or longer from the top?

Longer. The round diamonds trace the marquise outline, adding width evenly along both curved sides and carrying the two points outward, so the finished outline is a larger version of the same elongated shape rather than a circle with a gemstone inside it.

Will a wedding ring sit flush against the Hadley?

The halo comes to a point at the base of the sapphire, so a straight band meets that point rather than the shank and can leave a small gap. An open or contoured band nests around the point, and if you prefer a straight band we can adjust the taper of the shank so the two sit together.

A Halo Cut to the Marquise, Not a Circle

The marquise was cut for a king. Louis XV commissioned it in the 1740s, the story goes, to echo the smile of his mistress — which is also why it's called the navette: the little boat.

It's the most directional shape in jewelry. A marquise doesn't sit, it points. The Hadley's halo is built to agree with that: round diamonds following the marquise outline rather than ringing it in a circle, so the halo extends the direction instead of arguing with it. A circular halo around a marquise center would round off the one thing that makes it a marquise.

Sapphire is corundum — 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to a diamond — which makes it one of the few colored gemstones that can carry a marquise's fine points without concern. Those two points are the fragile part of this cut in any softer material; in sapphire they simply aren't a liability, and the halo surrounds them because the design wants it to rather than because it has to.
