Riff inlays two materials into an 8mm black tungsten band: charred whiskey barrel wood (sourced from used bourbon barrels) and a steel guitar string, set parallel through the center channel. The black tungsten frame holds both inlays securely, with the charred wood reading warm brown against the dark metal and the guitar string adding a single bright steel line.

Where does the whiskey barrel wood come from?

The wood inlay in the Riff is sourced from used bourbon barrels — oak barrels charred on the inside, used to age whiskey, and then retired from production. The wood carries the dark color and slight texture imparted by the charring process and by years of contact with bourbon. Each ring's wood inlay is unique because the source barrels weren't identical — small variations in color tone and grain pattern are characteristic of the material rather than defects. The wood is sealed during construction to protect it through daily wear.

Can the ring be engraved?

Yes. We offer interior engraving up to 30 characters, with 8 font choices to select from during checkout. The engraving is done inside the band (visible to the wearer only) — most couples choose initials, a meaningful date, a short phrase, or coordinates. Engraving is not available on the outside of these alternative metal bands due to the construction of the materials.

How durable is a tungsten ring with wood and string inlays?

The tungsten frame is extremely durable — tungsten carbide is one of the hardest practical metals for jewelry, rating around 8.5-9 on the Mohs scale. The wood and guitar string inlays are protected by the surrounding tungsten and sealed during construction. With normal daily wear, the Riff holds up well for years. We still recommend removing the ring during activities where it could take significant direct impact — tungsten itself is so hard that it can crack rather than dent under heavy impact, and the inlays would be affected if the frame is damaged.

Alternative metals cannot be resized like gold or platinum. If your finger size changes, we offer free size exchanges for the lifetime of your ring—just contact us to arrange.
Note: exchanges are for size only, not style, and any engraving or custom work will need to be redone at your expense.

Riff Black Tungsten with Charred Whiskey Barrel and Guitar String Ring

A wedding band is usually made from one material that someone refined. Riff is made from three that someone had to find.

The black tungsten frame is engineered — tungsten carbide compressed at high temperatures into the hardest practical metal for jewelry, then surfaced to a brushed black finish. The whiskey barrel wood comes from retired bourbon barrels — oak charred on the inside, used to age whiskey for years, then sourced and milled down to the strip width that fits the band's center channel. The guitar string is steel, originally manufactured for music. The Riff brings all three materials into a single 8mm ring — engineered metal, weathered wood, instrument wire — each one with a previous life before it became part of the band.

The Riff joins a Lisa Robin tradition of men's alternative metal wedding bands designed for couples who choose performance and design over precious metal.

What to Know Before You Choose Your Alternative Metal Ring

Built to last a lifetime — here's what makes these rings different.

Tungsten, titanium, and ceramic wedding rings offer outstanding scratch resistance and a modern aesthetic that holds up over time. For men who are hard on their hands or prefer a low-maintenance ring, alternative metals are a practical and stylish choice.

Alternative metal rings are available in whole and half sizes. Because of the hardness of these materials, they cannot be resized after they are made. If you're unsure of your size, contact us — we'll send you a finger sizer before you order.

Alternative metals cannot be removed with a standard ring cutter in a medical emergency. It's a practical consideration worth factoring into your decision. Many couples choose gold or platinum for this reason — we're happy to talk through the options with you.
