The Dorothy Cluster Engagement Ring

The Dorothy is a cluster engagement ring with graduated round accents running out to a marquise tip on each side — brilliance that steps down from the center rather than ringing it evenly.

The Dorothy is a cluster engagement ring that frames the center diamond with rounds on each side, ending at the outer edges with a marquise — the pointed tip that carries the cluster outward and gives the design its botanical lean. Ten accent diamonds in graduated sizes build the cluster, so brilliance steps down from the center rather than sitting in an even ring.

How is the Dorothy different from the Empire?

They're built the same way and priced the same — a graduated cluster of rounds flanking the center. The difference is how each side finishes. The Dorothy ends in a marquise, which comes to a point and gives the cluster a botanical, tapering quality. The Empire ends in a baguette, which is straight-edged and step-cut, anchoring the design in Art Deco geometry. Same carat weight, same structure, two different references. Choose the Dorothy if you want the softer, growing line; the Empire if you want the architectural one.

Why are the accent diamonds different sizes?

The cluster graduates on purpose. The rounds nearest the center are the largest and step down as they travel outward, so brilliance falls away from the center instead of forming an even ring around it. An evenly sized cluster reads as a halo; a graduated one draws the eye inward to the center and lets the design taper naturally into the band.

Which center shape works best with this cluster?

All five work, and the choice changes the character. Elongated shapes — marquise and oval — follow the direction the marquise tips are already pointing, so the whole ring reads as one continuous line. Emerald and radiant set a rectangular center against the pointed accents for deliberate contrast. Cushion softens everything. We can show you the same cluster with different centers during a design appointment.

The Dorothy Cluster Engagement Ring

Most clusters ring a center diamond with accents of a single size. The Dorothy graduates instead: the rounds closest to the center are the largest, stepping down as they move outward, until each side finishes in a marquise.

That marquise tip is what the whole design turns on. A round accent would simply stop; a marquise comes to a point, so the cluster reads as tapering outward into the band rather than ending at an edge. It's the detail that gives the Dorothy its botanical lean — the same reason a leaf reads as growing rather than sitting still.

Ten accent diamonds carry 0.82 carat between them, lab grown at VS-SI1 clarity and E-F-G color. Choose your center in marquise, oval, emerald, radiant, or cushion — the graduated cluster works with each, and an elongated center follows the marquise tips most naturally.
