Marquise Accents as Leaves on a Stem

The marquise was cut for a king. Louis XV commissioned it in the 1740s, the story goes, to echo the smile of his mistress — which is also why it's called the navette: the little boat.

It's the most directional shape in jewelry. A marquise doesn't sit, it points. The Hadley's halo is built to agree with that: round diamonds following the marquise outline rather than ringing it in a circle, so the halo extends the direction instead of arguing with it.

A marquise emerald is a rare thing to see, and there's a reason. Emeralds are almost always cut with trimmed corners — that's literally what an emerald cut is, a rectangle with its corners removed to protect them. Emerald is 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale and naturally inclusion-rich, carrying what gemologists call jardin, French for garden: a network of internal fractures that would be flaws in any other gemstone and are simply what emerald is.
