The Sophia frames an oval moss agate cabochon with a trio of lab diamonds on each side — a marquise and two rounds set like foliage around a stone that is itself a small green landscape. No two are alike; the mossy pattern in yours will be its own, and unlike the one in these photographs.

Moss agate's green isn't a body color at all but mineral inclusions branching through the quartz like ferns — explore colored gemstone rings.

What is moss agate?

Moss agate is a form of chalcedony — a quartz — with green dendritic inclusions running through it. Despite the name there's no moss involved: those branching green threads are minerals, mostly iron and manganese, that crystallized inside the gemstone as it formed. The pattern is different in every single one, which is why yours won't match the photographs. It's associated with growth and new beginnings, though the appeal for most couples is simpler than that: no one else has this one.

Why is the moss agate a cabochon instead of faceted?

A cabochon is polished into a smooth dome rather than cut with facets. Facets exist to bounce light back out of a transparent diamond — that's what makes it sparkle. Moss agate isn't working that way: what you want to see is the pattern suspended inside it, and a smooth dome shows that clearly while facets would fracture the view. The cut follows the material.

Which moss agate size should I choose, and how durable is it?

The moss agate comes in five oval sizes — 8x6, 9x7, 10x8, 11x9, and 12x10mm. Larger isn't automatically better here: because the pattern inside every moss agate is different, size changes how much of that pattern you see. A 12x10 shows a whole landscape; an 8x6 shows a fragment of one. Neither is more correct, and we'll send you an image of the actual gemstone before it's set either way. On durability — worth knowing before you choose. Moss agate sits around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaningfully softer than a diamond at 10 or a sapphire at 9. It holds up for daily wear but asks more of you: take it off for anything abrasive, including gardening, the gym, cleaning, and beach sand, and store it away from harder gemstones. A cabochon's smooth dome has no fragile edges, which helps. Nothing else looks like moss agate, so there's no substitute that gives you the same thing in a harder material — that's the real tradeoff. If durability matters more to you than this particular look, a green diamond is a different direction worth considering. Bring it to an appointment and we'll talk it through.

The Sophia Oval Moss Agate Engagement Ring

Moss agate isn't moss. The green threading through it is mineral — iron and manganese that crystallized inside chalcedony as it formed, in branching patterns that happen to look like foliage caught in ice. Nobody designed it, and no two are the same.

That's why it's cut as a cabochon: a smooth polished dome rather than facets. Faceting is how you make a diamond throw light back at you. A moss agate has something else to show, and facets would only interrupt it.

Around it sit a trio of lab created diamonds on each side — a 4x2mm marquise with two rounds — arranged as a botanical cluster that echoes the branching inside the gemstone. The band tapers so nothing competes with the center.

The moss agate is included in your ring. Because each one is unique, we'll send you an image of the actual gemstone before it's set, so you see the exact piece going into your ring.
