Sapphire Babes: Birthstone Jewelry to Celebrate Your day!

When you hear the word Sapphire do you immediately envision a stunning violet-blue gemstone? The beautiful royal blue sapphire has been associated with royalty and romance for centuries. Of course, we all remember Princess Diana's 12 carat stunner. From 1981, when Britain’s Prince Charles gave the blue sapphire engagement ring to Lady Diana Spencer until her death in 1997, Princess Di, as she was known, wore the sapphire ring, even after her divorce from Prince Charles. It is now worn by Kate Middleton, otherwise known as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, given to her upon engagement to Prince William.

Blue sapphire belongs to the mineral species corundum. From pure blue to  greenish blue to violetish blue it has a range of color. The name “sapphire” can also apply to any corundum that’s not red and doesn’t qualify as ruby, another corundum variety.

Besides blue sapphire and ruby, the corundum family also come in violet, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and intermediate hues. These so-called “fancy sapphires” , there are also “bi-colored” sapphires that have different combinations of colors. There is also a phenomenon known as color change, where most often a gemstone goes from blue in daylight or fluorescent lighting to purple under incandescent light. Sapphires can even be gray, black, or brown.

Sapphire is the birthstone for September and believed to protect those close to you from harm. It is also known as a representation of loyalty and trust. I added sapphires to my wedding bands for just that reason.

My personal favorites are rings. I love the boldness of the sapphire stone and the statement it makes.
