What About those Pearls [Care Instructions]

Have you found an updated way to wear those pearls? The strand that has been in your jewelry box forever like mine or the ones you inherited from Mom or Grandma. Oh, hadn't thought about updating your pearls? You should.

I like to add a pendant to update the look without changing the stringing of the pearls. But of course, I am often asked to use pearls to make something new and fresh. Once you choose the pearls that are right for you it is important to understand how to keep them looking beautiful.

 How to Care for Pearls

With pearls always think soft cloth. Store them in their own soft cloth pouch and clean them with a soft cloth moistened with water. Any brush bristles our abrasive texture will scratch the delicate surface. Always use only jewelry cleaners that are labeled as safe for Pearls. Sterling silver jewelry should be stored in plastic zippered bags to keep them from tarnishing. However, the plastic can emit a chemical that can be harmful to the surface of Pearls.

Pearls like to be in a controlled environment, a little moisture in the air, and no too hot. Please don’t lay them down near a source of heat. Pearls like the oils from your skin to keep them lustrous, but like all jewelry, hairspray, or perfume not so much. However, they don’t like to be sweaty so remove them before exercise.

If an "oops" happens and something gets on your Pearls, give them a good soak in lukewarm water with a gentle natural soap (not detergent). Rinse well and allow to dry wrapped in a cotton cloth, then wear them to return some oils from your skin to the pearls. Remember, water doesn't hurt pearls, they grew up in it!

Always remember that your Pearls should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off when you dress and undress. Most importantly, pearls are a gift you need to wear. They don't like being stored away and will improve in luster and glow when worn regularly!
